Patient-centric Approaches in Designing and Creating Products

In the fourth and final video interview with Applied Clinical Trials, Kristy Birchard, YPrime’s product owner, patient engagement, discusses the importance of designing products based on the experience of patients.

Kristy BirchardKristy Birchard, YPrime’s product owner of patient engagement, emphasizes the significance of incorporating patient and caregiver insights into the design and development of products, particularly in the realm of electronic clinical outcome assessments (eCOA). She highlights the importance of using design thinking or human-centered design to understand how patients, caregivers, and clinical sites interact with these products in their everyday environments. Birchard stresses that products and clinical trials should not be developed in isolation, as failing to consider the real-world experiences of end users can lead to barriers and challenges in product adoption and trial participation.

Birchard shares her personal experience with type 1 diabetes and how it informed her work on a glucometer feature. However, she underscores the necessity of gathering diverse perspectives from a broad range of individuals living with diabetes to ensure the product is truly patient-centric. By engaging with a variety of users, YPrime aims to create solutions that not only avoid adding to existing barriers but also actively address and solve issues faced by patients in clinical trials. This approach ensures that the products are more aligned with the needs and experiences of the end users, ultimately enhancing their effectiveness and usability.
